To the Outraged Without Cause or Reason
To the outraged who do not have an injured or dead Virginia Tech student, and to those with no connection to Virginia Tech at all: Stop overreacting.
You say that the entire school should be locked down immediately. Did you read what happened? Initially, two students were shot. The administration locked down the building and police arrived on the scene. It was determined that the killer left the campus to run away. One hour passes: nothing happens. Two hours later, he kills a group of engineering students across campus, and then the campus is locked down. You say the campus should have been locked down and classes canceled after the initial shooting. Forgive the cliché, but hindsight is 20/20. Because the event just happened, we do not even have enough knowledge to condemn the president of Virginia Tech, and you are not helping the situation by doing so. You are only aggravating the situation (but at least you get your 15 minutes of fame in an interview, right?) Are you just complaining about the situation because it is the fashionable thing to do? When in a situation that is unfolding, you do the best that you can, based on what you have planned. Consider the following possibility of how things might have worked out:
As a school president, one of your workers tells you that two students were shot. You are shocked! “Where is the killer?” you ask.
“He fled campus,” the aid tells you, ” The police investigating, and the dorm is locked down. “
“Good. Do they know who did it?”
“Not yet.”
“Are the students out of control?”
“Most do not know, so we can break the news to them later, after classes as planned.”
“Okay, schedule a meeting regarding this, and keep me updated.”
It is entirely possible that the situation at Virginia Tech happened this way. Why would a president want the students to panic in class, or used the event as an excuse to misbehave. This is a college campus we are talking about — I do not have to remind you how mature most students are not. It seems that the reaction was very quick once they found out that students across the campus were being executed. Would you have preferred a president that lost control and stated doing random things to appear busy? Please keep in mind that this was not something that happened over the space of 2 hours. Two different shootings happened that day that were two hours apart. To call for the president of the college to be fired without knowing more about the event is overreacting.
