Not so dirty Mexico
Bluelatinos.org has started an online petition against Urban Outfitters because they are selling a t-shirt that reads: “New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico.” They say that the t-shirt implies that there is a “dirty” Mexico and causes people to think “bad thoughts”.
Ok, I am Hispanic. My future uncle is Mexican. I still find it funny. As I matter of fact, I see the petition as a waste of time, online storage, and bandwidth. Also, does anyone realize that why they are trying to ban it? Because it creates thoughts that are “negative and racist ideas of the ‘the dirty Mexican.’” Do they believe that we should not be allowed to think certain things? Am I allowed to think at all?
Pressuring the company to stop selling the t-shirt because it offends people with no sense of humor is ridiculous and childish. Grade school students mess around with that stuff. Besides, it is not going to keep offensive thoughts out of peoples heads.
If there the first Mexican someone meets is dirty, filthy and proudly proclaims themselves as Mexican, then chances are that whenever that nationality comes up, they will think back to that first encounter. However, if the first Mexican they meet is a clean-cut, decent, well mannered nice guy, they will think back to that person whenever they think “Mexican.” A hundred t-shirts that say whatever about whoever will not make a very large dent in a person’s opinion, and censoring t-shirts does not help either.
